An on-campus observatory is great to get students excited about astronomy and involved in research activities. The downside of an on-campus observatory is of course ligt pollution, which for us has gotten increasingly worse over the years and might soon make any reasonable scholarly work impossible. Talks about moving the observatory to a dark, off-campus site have been ongoing for years, unfortunately without any real progress.

In the past the observatory has also been the hub for countless outreach activities. Unfortunately, my duties with the APS don't allow me to be involved as much as I used to.

I have involved many undergraduate students in my scholarly activities at the observatory, and it is one of the greatest pleasures to see them grow as a scientist and person as time goes by.

If you enjoyed the images on the homepage, you might want to check out the youtube videos below. They contain more images taken by me and one of my students at the Egan Observatory. I had asked my sons to add some 'space' music to it.
