One of the biggest differences between working at a national lab or a research intensive university and a smaller, more teaching oriented university is the amount of flexibility one has to built into ones scholarly activites. I have to be able to support a wide variety of research interests of my students.

My research is broadly centered around the term astrophysics. Specifically I work in three main areas:

Nuclear (astro)physics: the study of nuclei far from stability is important both from a pure physics point of view and is also crucial to the understanding of nucleo-synthesis. I spent most of my early career in this field, and stay current with new developments.

Observational astronomy: it is easy to give students hands-on experiences, utilizing the on-campus observatory. My main focus is the study of physical properties of asteroids.
